Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Brain Injuries

What is a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber?

A hyperbaric oxygen chamber uses higher pressure than the atmosphere to increase the amount of oxygen delivered through the blood. This environment helps heal various ailments by delivering more oxygen to the body’s tissues. For years, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been used to treat conditions like traumatic brain injuries, carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, and post-concussion symptoms.

What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a blow to the head causes the brain to collide with the skull, resulting in damage. Concussions are a mild form of TBI, but symptoms can still be disruptive. These symptoms may not appear immediately, sometimes taking days, weeks, or even months to manifest. Common symptoms of TBI include headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and ear pain or ringing. TBIs can vary in severity, and symptoms may affect daily functioning.

How Can Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Help with Traumatic Brain Injuries?

A TBI often leaves behind damaged brain tissue that the body struggles to repair on its own. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) increases the amount of oxygen delivered to the damaged tissue, reducing inflammation and promoting faster healing. Even if your TBI occurred years ago, HBOT can still benefit you. Studies show that HBOT continues to improve the healing process long after the injury. If you’re living with the long-term effects of a TBI, HBOT may significantly improve your quality of life.

What Are the Side Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Everyone’s body reacts to HBOT differently, and some people may experience side effects. The most common side effects include a feeling of plugged ears, similar to the sensation during air travel or when ascending a mountain. This is a normal response to the increased pressure, and your ears will usually pop on their own. Feeling lightheaded or dizzy is also common, as your body adjusts to the higher pressure. If you have any questions about HBOT or want to know if you’re a candidate, don’t hesitate to contact NorCal Brain Center. Schedule a free consultation by calling (408) 585-5275.
