Neuroplasticity

Understanding Neuroplasticity:

Neuroplasticity can be understood by breaking down the term. Neuro refers to the neurons of the brain while plasticity implies malleability. Therefore, Neuroplasticity is the neuron’s ability to change and adapt based on an individual’s experiences.  This is a very unique trait used by the brain which ensures the ability to grow and adapt to changes in your everyday life. More specifically there are two types of brain plasticity observed. The first type is referred to as structural plasticity and is when experiences or memories change a brain’s physical structure. The second type is known as functional plasticity and allows for brain functions to move from damaged areas to undamaged areas. In other words, our brain is so unique in that it is able to physically change its structure as well as move certain functions around.

Benefits :

There are many benefits to brain plasticity which help promote the ability to learn new things, enhance your existing cognitive capabilities, recover from strokes and traumatic brain injuries as well as many more. Therefore there is no age limit cap to learn and or recover from

How can I use this to my advantage?

After learning about this unique ability of the brain, it can be used to your advantage. The brain is not rigid and can change and learn based on experiences, therefore it is never too late. It is never too late to learn something new and form new neuronal connections through structural plasticity. This also means that there is hope after suffering from an accident that could have resulted in a traumatic brain injury or various other injuries. Even after suffering from a traumatic even the brain through therapy is able to change and adapt. Through consistent therapies the brain can heal. At NorCal brain Center we specialize in ensuring our patient’s goals are met through consistent therapies that helps them recover quickly, all possible due to the brain’s neuroplasticity. Therefore we like to see patients at minimum once a week, and if advised by the doctors multiple times a week. It is favorable to understand brain plasticity to be able to welcome new therapies that can physically change the brain and help you return to your normal life style.
