Why is gut health important?

A healthy gut is imperative for us to function as best as we can. A healthy gut includes tons of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and cells that collectively make up something called the microbiome. Our body’s microbiome is there to help us fight off pathogens and invaders in our body. It is therefore critically important to be aware of our gut health and work to make sure it stays healthy. The word gut health refers to the function and balance of the bacteria in our gut. When we eat food it is ultimately digested in the gut and from the nutrients and molecules can enter the bloodstream and be delivered to various parts of the body. When our body is filled with the “bad” type of bacteria, then we can have various pathogens entering our blood stream which can cause a variety of responses. A healthy gut is the way that our body can communicate with the organs of the body, including the brain, making sure that it is well nourished and healthy.

What problems can arise from having bad gut health?

Bad gut health symptoms can manifest in many ways. Problems such as abdominal pain, bloating, loose stool, constipation, heart burn, vomiting, diarrhea are all symptoms of a bad gut. If these symptoms persist, it could be a sign of an underlying gut issue that needs to be resolved. A leaky gut can also result from bad gut health. Certain foods can cause inflammations in our body. Over time, a high amount of inflammation can lead to our intestines to become more permeable to molecules of any sort, leaking them in and out of them gut hence the name “leaky gut.” In our intestines, we have tight junctions. Tight junctions’ control what passes through to the intestines. The name tight implies that these junctions are particular in what they let in and out. Over time if these tight junctions don’t work properly due to inflammation or any other reason, they start to let in and out more molecule and nutrients. The substances leak into our bloodstream when they normally would stay in the gut. Our body will recognize these nutrients as foreign for the time being and attack our body trying to get rid of them.
