Patient Review

Growing up I played football in high school but never got evaluated for having possible concussions in the past. I noticed that it was difficult for me to remember and learn in school. Thanks to being under care I’ve noticed I no longer have headaches and it feels like my brain is working properly again!

WHAT IS A CONCUSSION OR TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY?

  • A concussion or traumatic brain injury occurs when there is a physiological disturbance that directly affects brain function. This can be caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head and body.
  • There are about 3.8 million new cases of concussions diagnosed every year in the United States, over 837,000 of these cases being among children. About 50% of all concussions will go unreported. It is estimated that 1 in 10 athletes will experience a head injury that results in a concussion.
  • Every concussion is unique and can manifest in many different symptoms. Concussions often cause long term negative changes and can affect a person’s overall health.

CONCUSSIONS CAN BE BROKEN DOWN INTO

6 DIFFERENT CATEGORIES

Brain Fog, dizziness, light sensitivity, blurry vision, poor spatial awareness, double vision, motion sensitivity, nausea

Conventional Medical Treatment vs Our Treatment

Patients who are diagnosed with concussions or traumatic brain injury are usually advised by their doctors to rest and refrain from doing any strenuous activities for months on end while they heal. However, rest can’t always help you get back to normal.

What makes Norcal Brain Center different is our individual approach to care. Every single head injury is different from each other, and so there is no one single treatment for concussions. This means that we must tailor care to every patient and give them exactly what they will need in order to heal. We use some of the latest diagnostic equipment in our office in order to identify the underlying cause of the symptoms. Once identified, we focus on doing specific rehabilitation to strengthen areas of the brain that have been damaged or compromised by the injury.

CONCUSSION

Evaluation

Our evaluation is designed to identify and understand exactly which areas of the brain are affected. Each concussion patient undergoes an initial evaluation that includes a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG) brain scan, VIdeonystagmography (VNG) eye tracking test, Video Head Impulse Testing (vHIT), Cambridge Cognitive Assessment, Computerized Posturography (balance testing), and a full physical/neurological examination.

CONCUSSION

Treatment

Once the initial evaluation is done, a unique treatment plan is implemented. This treatment plan is centered around rebuilding connections in the brain and improving the systems in the body that have been compromised.

Our approach is comprised of many different types of rehabilitation depending on the areas of deficit. This includes neurological rehabilitation, physical rehabilitation, visual/vestibular therapies, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, photobiomodulation, electric stimulation, cognitive therapies, and nutritional/lifestyle changes. Our goal is to help you heal and get back the highest level of function as we can.
