The effects of increased oxygen on brain function.

What is the role of Oxygen in our brains?

Oxygen is imperative for the function of the human body, especially for the brain. While the brain makes up 2% of the human body weight it requires more than 20% of the total oxygen consumed. The oxygen that arrives at our brain is important to help stabilize our nervous system. In other words, having enough oxygen reaching our brains can help regulate our stress and better control our fight or flight response.

Symptoms of Low Oxygen levels:

When the brain is unable to receive 20% of the total oxygen intake, cerebral hypoxia can occur. Some symptoms of Cerebral Hypoxia include: poor judgement, lack of coordination, unresponsiveness, and pupils not reacting to light

Benefits of Increasing Oxygen flow:

A common question we hear is, “Why do I need more oxygen?” A simple way to explain this is using a similar example many of us know. While our bodies naturally create vitamin C to help us carry out our daily task, many individuals take more vitamin C in supplements. An increase in oxygen is similar to this, however the cells in our body can only carry a limited amount of oxygen. However by increasing the pressure, our body is able to carry more oxygen.  Apart from stabilizing your nervous system, increased oxygen to the brain can improve various other brain functions. An increase oxygen flow can stimulate brain activity, increase memory, and raise energy levels. Ultimately, increasing oxygen levels can improve overall cognitive functions.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

The hyperbaric oxygen therapy consists of a pressurized chamber which allows you to breathe pure oxygen. In the pressure is twice that of normal air pressure. This way your lungs are able to take in more oxygen that they would at normal air pressure. This type therapy allows your body to receive increased levels of oxygen throughout the entire body.  Increasing your oxygen levels not only helps your brain functions but it has also been shown to have a wide range of benefits. Some benefits include an increase in energy, decreased inflammation, wound healing and stem cell regeneration.  This therapy has been shown to help with severe anemia, brain abscess, burns, traumatic brain injury, vision loss and much more. At NorCal, we offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy which can help many patients with low oxygen levels, traumatic brain injury and much more. The therapy consists of a 90 minute session where the increased pressure allows you to breathe an increase of oxygen and be able to enjoy all of the benefits.
