What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback (NFB) is an emerging technology used by doctors to help manage conditions such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, OCD, and more. It is a form of biofeedback that “teaches” the brain to stay within its optimal wavelengths. Neurofeedback helps the brain regulate itself more effectively.
Typically, NFB is used alongside other treatments to address both medical and non-medical conditions. It has been shown to improve cognitive abilities, creativity, mood, relaxation, and other essential daily functions. Throughout our day, many factors hinder our well-being, and neurofeedback can help treat those that are manageable.
How Does Neurofeedback Work?
Neurofeedback offers various methods for brain training. At NorCal Brain Center, we use a cap with sensors placed on the head to read brain wavelengths, similar to an EEG. The patient then sits in front of a screen, watching a show. While this happens, the cap monitors brainwaves and sends the data to a computer for processing.
When the brain’s wavelengths fall within the optimal range, the system rewards the brain with a flash of light and a sound. Although we may not consciously register these rewards, the brain learns that staying in the desired range brings positive feedback. If the brain moves out of the optimal range, the sound stops, and the screen dims.
Over time, the brain learns the difference between where it is and where it needs to be to receive rewards. This type of feedback helps improve daily functioning, allowing for better relaxation, sleep, and more.
How Can Neurofeedback Help Me?
At NorCal Brain Center, we understand that everyone’s brain is unique. We create customized protocols based on individual needs. Neurofeedback can address conditions like ADHD, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and a variety of other issues, both medical and non-medical.
Each person’s treatment plan is tailored after an initial EEG assessment. This helps determine where the focus of the therapy should be. Some patients experience noticeable changes within the first few days, while others may require multiple sessions before seeing results. This variation is entirely normal and depends on the individual.
